What is Wellness?
Wellness involves a holistic approach to health and well-being that views many aspects of life as contributing to how “well” you are. As defined by the National Wellness Institute (did you know there is such a thing?!) wellness includes six dimensions: Occupational Wellness, Physical Wellness, Social Wellness, Intellectual Wellness, Spiritual Wellness, and Emotional Wellness. I also include Financial Wellness, which is related to, and different than occupational wellness, and Mental Wellness, which is related to some of the other dimensions, and not exactly the same. The National Wellness Institute defines wellness as “an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.
-Wellness is a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential
-Wellness is multidimensional and holistic, encompassing lifestyle, mental and spiritual well-being, and the environment
-Wellness is positive and affirming”
Why is Wellness Important?
Tending to the dimensions of wellness proactively and with regularity is important for living a fulfilling, healthy, and happy life. If you’re familiar with Brene Brown’s work on how to live a whole-hearted life, prioritizing wellness is an integral and important part of living whole-heartedly. When you look at your life from the wellness lens, and commit to creating positive changes, you will feel healthier, happier, and more aligned with your true authentic self. It involves being an active player in your life, not just standing by the sidelines watching life happen to you. You get to live engaged, creative, and empowered. Tending to wellness can be challenging, rewarding, powerful, and empowering. It tests our beliefs, our stories, and that which limits us, and allows us to recreate and choose a different way if needed or desired. I believe that if you’re ready to proactively choose wellness, you won’t be disappointed. It’s helpful to have a self-care and wellness coach to support you on this path, to hold you accountable, and to provide guidance and some cheerleading when the commitment gets tough.
